February 2019

Not only is it already February, but it's the third Monday of February which means it's time to remember past presidents (or Washington's Birthday before the rest of the presidents felt excluded). And, for some, it's a chance to enjoy a day off work!

But sadly not for us. We're wrapping up SHOT Show videos this month, as well as product updates such as the .410 upper choke testing.

We're also announcing the winner of last month's giveaway, so check to see if that's you!

Either way this week we're also doing the second chance Team Member Giveaway, so read below and make sure you're entered to win!

ARFCOM Team Member Giveaway

As we mentioned last month, though the 2018 annual ARFCOM Team Member Giveaway is done and over, there are a number of unclaimed prizes.

This means that we're going to do a second chance drawing at the end of this week (February 23rd) with all remaining prizes.

It will be run just like the last one, so everyone who's a Team Member (paid membership) is automatically entered. If you're not a Team member, now would be the time to do it!

Official thread with prizes and winners will be posted in Team, but info will also be posted in this thread.

2019 SHOT Show Wrap-up

Since the last newsletter, a number of new SHOT Show videos have been posted, including:

IFC .410 Upper - Update

Testing Chokes

We got the ATI choke tube set we had ordered for the IFC .410 upper and had a chance to hit the range with them.

Turns out they actually fit and work perfectly!

Initial measurements made it look like they weren't going to have any effect, but we were pleasantly surprised to see they actually worked as designed.

We tested using 1/2oz of 7-1/2 shot at 7 yds, and the results varied from 8" to 14" groups. All pellets contained within a man-sized target at that range.

Abe & Moses GSOC Knife

Abraham and Moses Lou Goodman Special Operations Combat Knife

A good knife is an invaluable tool. In a survival situation, it is probably the most valuable tool you can have and in those circumstances, you don't want to risk one that could fail.

For this reason I like to invest in quality tools, be they shop tools, firearms, or knives.

I got the chance to handle the Abraham and Moses Goodman knife, and this is the only fixed blade I think I will ever need.

Turning a Right into a Privilege: HR 1112 Gives Feds Unfettered Power to Block Gun Sales

H.R. 8, which would criminalize the private transfer of firearms, has received significant attention from the gun rights community. However, H.R. 1112, which purportedly targets the inappropriately-named “Charleston loophole,” is just as insidious an attack on gun owners. Both bills were passed out of the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.

Polls: No Lasting Support for Gun Control One Year After Parkland

Thursday marked the one year anniversary of the terrible crimes at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL.

It was a somber occasion, but some media outlets couldn’t contain their glee this week that last year’s horror might finally advance the anti-gun agenda. A CNN headlined heralded “A new era on guns.” “After Parkland, everything is different,” Salon gushed.

Another Study Blames Guns, Excludes Reality

A study published in Preventative Medicine by Yu Lu and Jeff R. Temple concludes that “the majority of mental health symptoms examined were not related to gun violence. Instead, access to firearms was the primary culprit.”

The first caveat here is that the researchers did not measure or test “gun violence.” They asked respondents – young adults who at one time attended one of seven public high schools in the southern United States – if they had ever threatened someone with a gun. There is no context for these incidents mentioned in the published study or in the supplementary material, no means to identify if the respondent was the aggressor in these scenarios or if they were defending themselves. Sixteen respondents reported they had threatened someone with a firearm; six were young women.

H.R. 8 Markup: Liberal Democrats Markup Gun Control Legislation

The Nancy Pelosi Speaker Era 2.0 continued on Wednesday, Feb. 13, with a markup of H.R 8, the “universal” background checks bill, in the House Judiciary Committee. Following on the heels of last week’s Judiciary Committee hearing, the same committee held a markup on Wednesday, where amendments and corrections to H.R. 8 could be considered. Unfortunately, the markup was clearly designed to allow the anti-gun Democrats who control the Judiciary Committee to grandstand and promote attacks on law-abiding gun owners, rather than consider efforts to combat violent crime.

House to Move Forward with Ineffective Gun Control Proposals

On Wednesday, gun owners got to see what a Nancy Pelosi controlled Congress looks like as the House Judiciary Committee held its first gun control hearing in nearly a decade. Things went as one would expect.

While the hearing was labeled “Preventing Gun Violence: A Call to Action,” it was intended to be the legislative launching pad for H.R. 8, the “universal” background check bill introduced by California Representative Mike Thompson (D). As we have pointed out, “universal” background checks will do nothing to prevent gun violence. H.R. 8 does, however, have the potential of ensnaring otherwise law-abiding gun owners unfamiliar with its proposed new restrictions on lawful activities that pose no threat to public safety.
